Here are the following questions that people like to ask.
Q: [What is Taekwondo? ]
A: [Taekwondo is a striking martial art which originated out of Korea. The origins of taekwondo
are unknown, ranging from a martial art adapted from the Japanese karate, to a fighting style for Korean peasants to
defend themselves without weapons, to the fighting style of the Korean military. Our style of taekwondo focuses on
striking with hands and feet, forms, sparring, board breaking, self defense, and weapons, and the practical application
of taekwondo.

Q: [What must I do to achieve a black belt? ]
A: [Colored belts must earn merit stripes and receive instructor approval to test for higher rank. Merit stripes for the
lower ranks involve knowledge of basic techniques, combatives, which are short self defense and sparring segments,
and form. Higher ranking colored belts must show knowledge of their ranking combatives and form, weapon, and board
breaking. All material must be done with skill appropriate to the individual and their rank, and with a positive
black belt attitude. These training points, in addition to sparring, lifeskill knowledge, and Safety N.E.T. Kids
curriculum, make up the testing requirements. Each student has a different martial arts journey, and some will
learn and test more quickly than others. We have had students achieve black belt in 2 years, others might take longer,
it is all about the individual's journey.

How old do you have to be to train in the martial arts?
At Legacy, we believe there is a martial art for every age and every body. Our taekwondo curriculum starts
with children as young as 5 in our Karate Kubs program and we have seen students in their sixties start and
earn their black belts. Our tai chi curriculum starts as young as age 13, and there have been students in
their nineties who continue to train. Remember, as with any physical activity, we do recommend a physician's
approval before starting your training.
